How to open and manage an SMSF trading account with moomoo

This guide outlines the steps for opening a Self-Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) trading account with moomoo, how to add an SMSF trading account if you already have an individual account, how to transfer your holdings, and how to seek further assistance if needed.

1.Opening a new SMSF trading account

To open an SMSF trading account, you will be required to provide the following information:

• Full name of the SMSF trust, ABN and TFN (Tax File Number)

• Identification documents for:

  • All individual trustees;

  • Or corporate trustees

  • All members of the SMSF

  • Appointer(s)/settlor(s), if applicable

  • Any individual authorised by the member(s) of the trust to operate the account (you must provide supporting documents such as a certified board resolution, authorised certificate, or power of attorney)

Important: Please ensure a complete electronic copy of your SMSF trust deed is uploaded to support your application.

 


2.Adding an SMSF trading account to your existing moomoo account

If you already have an individual or other types of trading account and wish to add an SMSF trading account, please follow the steps below:

Via the moomoo app:

1.Open the moomoo app and go to: Accounts > Universal Account > More > Account > Add Accounts

2.Select your new account type (e.g., SMSF)

3.Confirm your contact details

4.Complete the account opening information mentioned above

5.Set your login password

6.Submit the application

Your new moomoo ID will be generated once submitted.

Note: We recommend updating your app to version 14.18 or above for the best experience.

Login instructions for multiple accounts:

There are four methods to log in:

• moomoo ID + password

• Mobile number + verification code

• Email + password

• Mobile number + password

We recommend using mobile number + verification code for the smoothest login experience.

Switch between different accounts:

Once you log in, you could easily switch your accounts (for example, individual account & SMSF account) on moomoo, simply go to Me > Settings > Switch Account.

Please note, your assets held in the SMSF trading account are segregated from your individual or other types of accounts.

 


3.Transferring holdings to your moomoo SMSF trading account

If you wish to transfer your existing holdings from another brokerage to your moomoo SMSF trading account, you need to initiate a share transfer request.

What types of holdings can be transferred to my moomoo SMSF trading account?

You can transfer holdings from the AU, US, and HK markets to your moomoo SMSF trading account via one of the following methods: FOP, ACAT, or SRN. Please note that fractional shares are not supported for transfer.

 

How long does the transfer process typically take?

Once all required documents are submitted, the transfer process typically takes 3 to 10 business days.

 

Are there any fees involved in transferring SMSF assets to moomoo?

There are no fees for transferring stocks into your moomoo SMSF trading account.

 

Will I retain my cost base and holding history?

Yes, you will retain your cost base and holding history. You may need to provide the original cost price for each holding when submitting the transfer request. If no cost price is provided, the closing price on the date the transfer is completed will be used as the cost base.

 

Can I transfer part of my holdings from my current broker to moomoo?

Yes, partial transfers are supported.

 

What if the address on my existing brokerage account is different from the address on my moomoo SMSF trading account?

If the address registered with your existing broker is different from the address on your moomoo SMSF trading account (for example, your previous vs. current residential address), the transfer will not be successful.

To proceed with the transfer, the addresses on both accounts must match. You can either:

• Update your address with your existing broker to match the one on your moomoo SMSF trading account, or

• Update your moomoo SMSF trading account address to match your existing brokerage account.

5.Setting up an SMSF trust

If you have not yet established an SMSF trust, you will need to set this up before applying for a trading account. An SMSF must be structured with either individual or corporate trustees and comply with Australian Tax Office (ATO) regulations.

You may wish to consult a licensed accountant, financial adviser, or SMSF administrator to help you establish a compliant trust structure. Once your SMSF trust is established and has an ABN and TFN, you may proceed to open your trading account via moomoo.
