What should options buyers do if they no longer want to exercise their options?
Gentle Reminder:
While we've discussed many rules regarding exercising options, it's important to emphasize that, in general, the profits from early exercising are typically lower than those obtained from closing the position.
To protect investors, even if you have submitted an exercise request, moomoo still provides the following options:
I. For those who have applied for early exercise
1)Timely Close the Position
After submitting an exercise request, you still have the option to close the position. However, it's important to note that you should close the position before the exercise date takes effect.
The number of contracts actually submitted to the clearing house for exercise will be based on the number of contracts held at the close of trading.
How to Understand This:
For example, if you submitted an exercise request for 5 contracts on July 17 but then decide you no longer wish to exercise, you must close your position before the market closes on July 17.
If you close 3 of those contracts on that day, then only the remaining 2 contracts will be submitted for exercise after the market closes.
If you close all 5 contracts that day, your available position would be 0, and therefore, no exercise request would be submitted.
2) Withdraw the Exercise Request
If you change your mind after submitting an exercise request and decide not to proceed, you can withdraw your request.
Typically, you should do this before the effective date, as any withdrawal made afterward will be invalid since the request has already been sent to the clearing house.
II. For those who wish to Exercise Lapse Options
1) Waive the Right to Exercise
If you are concerned that your option might be in the money at expiration but do not wish to exercise, you can waive your right to exercise.
You can submit a waiver request at any time after opening the position and before expiration.
The waiver will take effect after the market closes on the expiration date. Waiver requests submitted after the market closes on the expiration date will not be processed.
If you would like to exercise your options early or waive your exercise rights, please contact customer service at cs@us.moomoo.com, Moomoo Financial Inc. will proceed after confirming the investor’s intention to exercise and the purchasing power of the account required for the exercise.
Another Gentle Reminder:
If an investor applies to waive their right to exercise and fails to close the position before the market closes on the expiration date, the option's value will be cleared to zero after expiration, and it will not be automatically exercised, regardless of whether it is in the money.
Any potential responsibilities and losses arising from waiving the right to exercise and failing to close the position will be borne by the investor.
How to Understand This Statement:
Once you waive your right to exercise, the system recognizes that this option will not be processed for you.
Therefore, it is crucial to actively close the position; otherwise, even if the option is in the money at expiration, the system will not take any action on your behalf.
If you do not actively close the position, this option could potentially expire worthless, causing you to incur potential losses.
