How does options buyers exercise their option?
If you are an options buyer
, there are two scenarios for exercising your option: exercising at expiration and exercising early.
Here's a kind reminder:
While we've covered various rules regarding exercising options, it's important to recognize that, in many cases, the profits gained from exercising an option may be less than those obtained by closing the position.
In the U.S. stock markets, most options buyers prefer to close their positions before expiration instead of exercising early or waiting until expiration.
Unless the circumstances are favorable, it's generally advisable to close the position early.
I. Exercising at expiration: No action needed
If you hold the option until the expiration date, the system will automatically determine if it qualifies for exercise based on the closing settlement price.
If it meets the automatic exercise criteria and your account has enough buying power, the option will be exercised automatically, with the effective date being the expiration date.
(Note: Be aware of the "automatic exercise conditions." For the US options market, the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC) stipulates that the option must be in-the-money on the exercise date and meet the following conditions : Long call: Stock price ≥ Strike price + $0.01,Long put: Stock price ≤ Strike price - $0.01.)
II. Exercising early: Action required
If you want to exercise the option early, you can submit a request anytime before the expiration date.
The timing of your request will influence the effective date of the exercise.
The system will check if the option meets the automatic exercise criteria based on the closing settlement price on the day you submit your request.
If it qualifies and your account has sufficient buying power, it will be exercised automatically.
(Note: For early exercise, the "automatic exercise conditions" must also be met. If you want to exercise the option without meeting these conditions, you can apply for an out-of-the-money exercise. )
