How to make an internal position transfer

1. What is internal position transfer

The internal position transfer feature allows you to transfer positions between different Moomoo Canada accounts held in your name, helping you manage your holdings more flexibly. For example, you can transfer positions from an individual cash account to an individual margin account.

2. Supported position types

Currently supported position types: US stocks, US ETFs, US options, Canadian stocks, and Canadian ETFs.

3. Supported transfer directions

3.1 Transfers between non-registered accounts

You can make an internal position transfer between an Individual Margin Account and an Individual Cash Account. After the transfer is completed, the original cost basis will be synced to the destination account.

  • Individual Cash Account to Individual Margin Account: No additional restrictions.

  • Individual Margin Account to Individual Cash Account: Please ensure that the margin account still meets the margin requirements after the transfer; Otherwise, the transfer request will be rejected.

3.2 Transfers from a non-registered account to a registered account

You can transfer positions from an Individual Cash Account/Individual Margin Account to a TFSA/RRSP/SRRSP.

Please note:

  • Once this type of transfer is completed, transferring the positions back to the original account is not supported.

  • This type of transfer is treated as a stock contribution and will use the corresponding contribution room.

  • The contribution amount is calculated based on the regular-session closing price of the relevant security on the day the transfer is completed (4:00 PM ET).

  • After the transfer is completed, the original cost basis will be synced to the destination account for daily P&L display. For tax purposes, however, the positions will be treated as closed in the original account at the closing price on the day the transfer is completed, which may result in a realized gain or loss that must be reported in accordance with applicable tax rules.

For example:

You hold 1 share of Stock A in a non-registered account with an average cost basis of USD 100. You transfer this position to a registered account, and the closing price of Stock A on the day the transfer is completed is USD 140. In that case:

In the moomoo App, the destination account will still show a cost basis of USD 100. For tax purposes, however:

  • Non-registered account: The position is treated as sold at USD 140, resulting in a gain of USD 40 (140 - 100 = 40);

  • Registered account: The transfer is treated as a stock contribution, and USD 140 is counted toward the contribution room.

3.3 Unsupported transfer directions

The following directions are not currently supported for internal position transfers:

  • TFSA / RRSP / SRRSP to Individual Margin Account / Individual Cash Account

  • Transfers among TFSA, RRSP, and SRRSP

4. How to initiate an internal position transfer

Moomoo Canada does not currently support initiating internal position transfers in the moomoo App.

Form: LOD internal position transfer.pdf

5. Internal position transfer fees

There are no fees for position transfers between accounts.

6. Internal position transfer processing time

Internal position transfers are usually completed within 1 to 3 business days. If there are any filled trades in your account on the same day, an internal position transfer request submitted that day will be deferred by one day; processing will begin only after there are no filled orders in the account for that day.

During the processing of an internal position transfer, trading and account transfer functions for the account will be temporarily frozen, usually until 9:00 AM on the day after the transfer is completed. Deposit and withdrawal functions are not affected.

7. How to cancel an internal position transfer

Once an internal position transfer has entered processing, it cannot be canceled. Before submitting a request, please check the transferring account, receiving account, and the positions to be transferred.
