China poses a legitimate national security threat in autonomous vehicles - Lidar Coalition
Hesai (mentioned in the article), Innovusion, Livox and Robosense are China based LiDAR sensor makers. The 4 Chinese companies separately supply LiDAR sensors to Chinese EV companies like Li Auto, Jidu (Baidu), NIO, BYD, Zeekr and Xpeng. Congress is considering restricting their Autonomous Vehicles testing due to security concerns.
On the other hand, Tesla's Full-Self Drive has no issue because it uses camera-based system and operates in many countries for years. Tesla also dumped LiDAR because the sensor is too expensive and it used HD mapping which is too costly to make.

A coalition of companies that make technology that powers autonomous vehicles are raising concerns about their Chinese competitors.
Members of the group, called the Lidar Coalition, make what are known as Light Detection and Ranging products. When used with radar, these systems allow autonomous vehicles to detect cars or pedestrians and can create highly detailed maps of everything the vehicles encounter.
The companies argue that the technology can harvest large amounts of sensitive data about US infrastructure, and may be used by Chinese firms on military vehicles to make them self-driving, according to the coalition.
The coalition, meanwhile, is sounding the alarm on the risks of Detroit from doing business with Chinese companies. A recent 20-page white paper from the coalition is entitled “Financial, Reputational and Legal Risks for US Companies Sourcing Lidar Sensors From Chinese-Owned or Controlled- Entities.” Brendan McCormick, a spokesman for the coalition, said the report was intended to identify potential risks for members.

ZnWCOP : This may explain EV companies that use LiDAR sensor on Autonomous vehicles are still in testing stage. Tesla FSD has mass rolled out and collected data for years.
