Wall Street Summary
A morning rally ran out of steam as broadly positive corporate earnings were again overshadowed by rising yields. Rates rose following unexpectedly strong weekly jobless claims and hawkish comments from a Federal Reserve official.
The $S&P 500 Index(.SPX.US)$ faded to a loss of 29 points or 0.8 per cent. The $Dow Jones Industrial Average(.DJI.US)$ finished 90 points or 0.3 per cent in the red after being up as much as 300 points. The $Nasdaq Composite Index(.IXIC.US)$ lost 66 points or 0.61 per cent.
Solid early gains ebbed away as the yield on ten-year US treasuries hit a fresh 14-year high, lately reaching 4.239 per cent. Bonds sold off, driving yields higher after Fed Bank of Philadelphia President Patrick Harker said the central bank had made “a disappointing lack of progress on curtailing inflation”.
