Enel SpA (ENLAY.US) has become the latest European energy giant to announce plans to expand the sale of renewable power in Australia, Zhitong Financial APP has learned.
Enel said in a statement that after Australia's energy regulator issued a retail license this week, it would launch a service called "greentailer" that provides 100 per cent renewable energy to help customers achieve sustainability goals. The company initially targets commercial and industrial users, but plans to expand to residential users.
Less than a month ago, Royal Dutch Shell acquired one of Australia's largest household renewable energy suppliers, leading some customers to say they would shift their orders to other companies rather than buying renewable energy from big oil companies. As one of Europe's largest producers of renewable energy, Enel is likely to be more popular. The company plans to stop using coal by 2027 and natural gas by 2040. In its global portfolio of 90 billion watts, renewable energy generates 55 billion watts of electricity.
In Australia, the company has three solar power plants with an installed capacity of 310 megawatts and says it operates Australia's largest virtual power plant with an installed capacity of 350 megawatts. The company said it would reach out to commercial and industrial customers this month.
Enel Australia Manager Werther Esposito said in a statement that Enel is an one-stop green retailer that uses Australia's rich renewable resources to provide energy for the country's clean energy future.
