New Zealand Shares Add 0.6% as RBNZ Signals Cautious Tightening Pace -- Market Talk

Dow Jones Newswires ·  Nov 23, 2021 23:20

0418 GMT - New Zealand's NZX-50 closed 0.6% higher at 12766.79, boosted by a RBNZ projection for interest-rate increases that wasn't as aggressive as expected and a specific timetable for reopening of the country's border. Interest-rate sensitive power utilities and REITs were higher. Meridian Energy rose 4.2% and Mercury added 2.2%. Travel and tourism stocks were mixed. The government detailed its plans for easing border restrictions starting in mid-January, but travel will still be materially more difficult than it was before Covid-19. Auckland International Airport rose 1.3%, Air New Zealand gained 1.0% and campervan-rental company Tourism Holdings dropped 3.1%. Heavyweight Fisher & Paykel Healthcare climbed 2.2% ahead of its half-year results on Thursday. (stephen.wright@wsj.com)
