The Japanese government pension investment fund (GPIF) saw investment growth for the fifth consecutive quarter as returns on overseas assets helped make up for losses in Japan's domestic stock market.

Overseas equities have been GPIF's best-performing asset since April last year, when the fund began to reduce its reliance on Japanese government bonds and focus on equities and foreign debt.In July, GPIF reported record returns for the fiscal year ended March.

Masataka Miyazono, president of GPIF, said in a statement:
