Not Many Are Piling Into Zhengwei Group Holdings Company Limited (HKG:2147) Stock Yet As It Plummets 40%

Simply Wall St ·  May 20 23:15

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Zhengwei Group Holdings Company Limited (HKG:2147) share price has dived 40% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 84% share price decline.

Although its price has dipped substantially, it's still not a stretch to say that Zhengwei Group Holdings' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Food industry in Hong Kong, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.6x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Zhengwei Group Holdings' Recent Performance Look Like?

Zhengwei Group Holdings has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

How Is Zhengwei Group Holdings' Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Zhengwei Group Holdings' is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 25% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 57% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 11% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we find it interesting that Zhengwei Group Holdings is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

What Does Zhengwei Group Holdings' P/S Mean For Investors?

Following Zhengwei Group Holdings' share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Zhengwei Group Holdings currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. There could be some unobserved threats to revenue preventing the P/S ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
