Shandong Sinocera Functional Material (SZSE:300285) Investors Are Sitting on a Loss of 59% If They Invested Three Years Ago

Simply Wall St ·  May 4 20:32

While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Shandong Sinocera Functional Material Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300285) share price has gained 16% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been disappointing. Indeed, the share price is down a tragic 59% in the last three years. So it's good to see it climbing back up. The rise has some hopeful, but turnarounds are often precarious.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the three years that the share price fell, Shandong Sinocera Functional Material's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 5.2% each year. The share price decline of 26% is actually steeper than the EPS slippage. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 11% in the twelve months, Shandong Sinocera Functional Material shareholders did even worse, losing 34% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 4%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering.
