Do Kanzhun's (NASDAQ:BZ) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 28 10:49

It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Kanzhun (NASDAQ:BZ). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

How Fast Is Kanzhun Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years Kanzhun's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Kanzhun has grown its trailing twelve month EPS from CN¥1.21 to CN¥1.32, in the last year. That's a modest gain of 8.8%.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. On the revenue front, Kanzhun has done well over the past year, growing revenue by 21% to CN¥5.5b but EBIT margin figures were less stellar, seeing a decline over the last 12 months. So if EBIT margins can stabilize, this top-line growth should pay off for shareholders.

Are Kanzhun Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$8.9b company like Kanzhun. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at CN¥1.5b. Coming in at 16% of the business, that holding gives insiders a lot of influence, and plenty of reason to generate value for shareholders. So there is opportunity here to invest in a company whose management have tangible incentives to deliver.

Should You Add Kanzhun To Your Watchlist?

One positive for Kanzhun is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination is very appealing. So yes, we do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on.
