Verint Systems Inc.'s (NASDAQ:VRNT) Business And Shares Still Trailing The Industry

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 28 10:05

Verint Systems Inc.'s (NASDAQ:VRNT) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.1x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the Software industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4.3x and even P/S above 11x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Verint Systems' Recent Performance Look Like?

Recent times haven't been great for Verint Systems as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Verint Systems' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 9.7% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 4.9% per annum over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 15% per year growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, its clear as to why Verint Systems' P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Final Word

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of Verint Systems' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
