EZFill Holdings Inc.'s (NASDAQ:EZFL) Shares Leap 43% Yet They're Still Not Telling The Full Story

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 27 10:16

Despite an already strong run, EZFill Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:EZFL) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 43% in the last thirty days. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 26%.

Even after such a large jump in price, EZFill Holdings may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, considering almost half of all companies in the Oil and Gas industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.9x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does EZFill Holdings' P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Recent times have been quite advantageous for EZFill Holdings as its revenue has been rising very briskly. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on EZFill Holdings' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as EZFill Holdings' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 54%. The latest three year period has also seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, aided by its incredible short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have been over the moon with those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 6.6%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring

In light of this, it's peculiar that EZFill Holdings' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On EZFill Holdings' P/S

EZFill Holdings' stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We're very surprised to see EZFill Holdings currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
