While Shareholders of Zhangjiagang Furui Special Equipment (SZSE:300228) Are in the Black Over 1 Year, Those Who Bought a Week Ago Aren't so Fortunate

The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the Zhangjiagang Furui Special Equipment Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300228) share price is up 27% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market decline of around 15% (not including dividends). If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Having said that, the longer term returns aren't so impressive, with stock gaining just 2.3% in three years.

While the stock has fallen 9.4% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last year Zhangjiagang Furui Special Equipment grew its earnings per share, moving from a loss to a profit.

When a company is just on the edge of profitability it can be well worth considering other metrics in order to more precisely gauge growth (and therefore understand share price movements).

We doubt the modest 0.6% dividend yield is doing much to support the share price. We think that the revenue growth of 40% could have some investors interested. Many businesses do go through a phase where they have to forgo some profits to drive business development, and sometimes its for the best.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Zhangjiagang Furui Special Equipment shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 27% over the last year. That's including the dividend. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 0.9% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business.
