KUALA LUMPUR, April 26, 2024 — Petronas (PETRONAS) and CelComDigi Digital Network (CELComDigi) are bringing good news to the energy sector and are collaborating to harness the power of 5G to accelerate the digital transformation and sustainable development of the sector.

CNPC Group Vice President of Technology and Commercialization Aadrin Azly, Albern Murty, Deputy CEO of Tiandi Digital Network, and Shah Yang Razalli, Deputy CEO of Gentari and CEO of Gentari Green Mobility, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formally conclude a partnership. Meanwhile, CNPC's senior vice president of project delivery and technology Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof was also present to witness this important moment.

CNPC and Tiandi Digital Network will use 5G technology to explore the potential of the digital technology industry in a two-year strategic cooperation to continuously improve CNPC's operational performance.

In addition, the two sides will also cooperate to explore the integration of clean energy solutions into Tiandi Tong Digital Network's corporate products to promote clean energy in the Malaysian business community.

Aadrin Azly, Vice President of Technology and Commercialization at CNPC Group, said, “CNPC plays an important role in supporting the national science and technology agenda, and has spared no effort to help strengthen Malaysia's innovative strength and thereby enhance its international status. As an example in the Malaysian business community, we adopted 5G technology last year to deploy a 5G dedicated network at the Sungai Wudang LNG Regasification Terminal (RGTSU) in Melaka, and have seen a successful improvement in operational efficiency.”

He added, “This partnership provides us with a fantastic opportunity to expand the power of 5G in our businesses and the wider community. We are looking to build a strong network infrastructure to meet the growing needs of the oil and gas industry and enjoy reliable high-speed internet connectivity.”

Albert Murty, Deputy CEO of Tiandi Digital Network, stated, “This memorandum of understanding can help accelerate the modernization trend of the oil and gas industry through 5G connectivity. Over the past 5 years, we have worked closely with CNPC to deploy dedicated 4G LTE networks and test digital use cases on offshore platforms. Together, we have realized actual digital applications of drilling platform operations, such as 'connecting drillers', which used to be an edge test case, now a necessary condition for ensuring the productivity and safety of drilling workers. CNPC has always maintained an open attitude and has the courage to explore new ways of working and innovating, which supports the steady progress of testing and execution. This kind of thinking will surely add points to our future cooperation and ensure good delivery. We look forward to promoting 5G-related advancements in other business areas, using real-time connectivity and data analysis to optimize operations, and work together to make our shared vision of clean energy in the oil and gas sector a reality.”

A strong record of cooperation lays a solid foundation to help accelerate digital adoption

CNPC and Tiandi Digital Network began a long-term partnership in 2019, when the two parties cooperated to implement the first dedicated 4G LTE network at Angsi, CNPC's largest offshore platform. To date, the two companies have successfully fully implemented 4G connectivity on 21 offshore platforms. Furthermore, the two sides are also cooperating to improve and optimize the connectivity infrastructure of the CNPC plant, support digital solutions through consistent connectivity, and enhance the operational efficiency of the plant.

The latest project is the deployment of the first complete private 5G network at Petronas's flagship offshore platform Kasawari Carbon Capture and Storage (CSS) project near Sarawak. With 5G and oil and gas solution best practices, Kasawari will be a test bed for 5G use cases to inspire more digital innovation. Backed by the experience of deploying private networks over the past 5 years, other connected offshore platforms can also use successful use cases to help CNPC modernize operations and quickly launch new sustainable development practices.
