As an investor its worth striving to ensure your overall portfolio beats the market average. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. We regret to report that long term Zhejiang Hisoar Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002099) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 49% in three years, versus a market decline of about 19%. And over the last year the share price fell 25%, so we doubt many shareholders are delighted. But it's up 8.3% in the last week.

The recent uptick of 8.3% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Zhejiang Hisoar Pharmaceutical saw its share price decline over the three years in which its EPS also dropped, falling to a loss. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. However, we can say we'd expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Zhejiang Hisoar Pharmaceutical shareholders are down 24% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 15%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 6% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Zhejiang Hisoar Pharmaceutical better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Zhejiang Hisoar Pharmaceutical (1 is a bit concerning!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
