Positive Sentiment Still Eludes Butterfly Network, Inc. (NYSE:BFLY) Following 28% Share Price Slump

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 20 09:42

The Butterfly Network, Inc. (NYSE:BFLY) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 28%. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 69% loss during that time.

Following the heavy fall in price, Butterfly Network may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.4x, since almost half of all companies in the Medical Equipment industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 3.2x and even P/S higher than 7x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Butterfly Network Performed Recently?

Butterfly Network hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Butterfly Network's Revenue Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Butterfly Network's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 10% decrease to the company's top line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 42% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 11% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 8.9% growth , the company is positioned for a comparable revenue result.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Butterfly Network's P/S is lagging behind its industry peers. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Bottom Line On Butterfly Network's P/S

Butterfly Network's recently weak share price has pulled its P/S back below other Medical Equipment companies. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've seen that Butterfly Network currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecast growth is in line with the wider industry. Despite average revenue growth estimates, there could be some unobserved threats keeping the P/S low. Perhaps investors are concerned that the company could underperform against the forecasts over the near term.
