Further Weakness as Xingyuan Environment Technology (SZSE:300266) Drops 15% This Week, Taking Five-year Losses to 72%

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 18 20:10

Long term investing is the way to go, but that doesn't mean you should hold every stock forever. It hits us in the gut when we see fellow investors suffer a loss. For example, we sympathize with anyone who was caught holding Xingyuan Environment Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300266) during the five years that saw its share price drop a whopping 72%. And we doubt long term believers are the only worried holders, since the stock price has declined 53% over the last twelve months. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 31% in the last three months.

After losing 15% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

Xingyuan Environment Technology wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last five years Xingyuan Environment Technology saw its revenue shrink by 8.5% per year. That's definitely a weaker result than most pre-profit companies report. So it's not altogether surprising to see the share price down 11% per year in the same time period. We don't think this is a particularly promising picture. Ironically, that behavior could create an opportunity for the contrarian investor - but only if there are good reasons to predict a brighter future.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Xingyuan Environment Technology shareholders are down 53% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 16%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 11% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Xingyuan Environment Technology .
