Henan Senyuan Electric (SZSE:002358) Sheds CN¥372m, Company Earnings and Investor Returns Have Been Trending Downwards for Past Five Years

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 18 19:42

We're definitely into long term investing, but some companies are simply bad investments over any time frame. We really hate to see fellow investors lose their hard-earned money. Anyone who held Henan Senyuan Electric Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002358) for five years would be nursing their metaphorical wounds since the share price dropped 74% in that time. And it's not just long term holders hurting, because the stock is down 25% in the last year. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 17% in the last three months.

With the stock having lost 10% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Henan Senyuan Electric became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.

The revenue fall of 0.8% per year for five years is neither good nor terrible. But it's quite possible the market had expected better; a closer look at the revenue trends might explain the pessimism.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 16% in the twelve months, Henan Senyuan Electric shareholders did even worse, losing 25%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 12% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Henan Senyuan Electric (2 are potentially serious!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
