Zuora, Inc.'s (NYSE:ZUO) Prospects Need A Boost To Lift Shares

You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3.2x Zuora, Inc. (NYSE:ZUO) is a stock worth checking out, seeing as almost half of all the Software companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.2x and even P/S higher than 10x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Zuora Performed Recently?

Recent times haven't been great for Zuora as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Zuora?

Zuora's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 9.0% gain to the company's revenues. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 41% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 10% per year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 15% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this information, we can see why Zuora is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
