Agilysys, Inc. (NASDAQ:AGYS) Not Lagging Industry On Growth Or Pricing

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 17 07:24

With a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 9.6x Agilysys, Inc. (NASDAQ:AGYS) may be sending very bearish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all the Software companies in the United States have P/S ratios under 4.2x and even P/S lower than 1.6x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Agilysys' Recent Performance Look Like?

Agilysys certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Keen to find out how analysts think Agilysys' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

Agilysys' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 19% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 62% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 22% per year as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 15% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Agilysys' P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Agilysys' P/S

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our look into Agilysys shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
