The Five-year Underlying Earnings Growth at Shuifa Energas Gas (SHSE:603318) Is Promising, but the Shareholders Are Still in the Red Over That Time

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 16 21:06

Some stocks are best avoided. We don't wish catastrophic capital loss on anyone. Anyone who held Shuifa Energas Gas Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603318) for five years would be nursing their metaphorical wounds since the share price dropped 78% in that time. We also note that the stock has performed poorly over the last year, with the share price down 29%. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 18% in the last three months.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Shuifa Energas Gas became profitable within the last five years. Most would consider that to be a good thing, so it's counter-intuitive to see the share price declining. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.

We don't think that the 0.5% is big factor in the share price, since it's quite small, as dividends go. Revenue is actually up 50% over the time period. A more detailed examination of the revenue and earnings may or may not explain why the share price languishes; there could be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Shuifa Energas Gas shareholders are down 28% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 17%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 12% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business.
