Some Urovo Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300531) Shareholders Look For Exit As Shares Take 28% Pounding

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 16 18:34

To the annoyance of some shareholders, Urovo Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300531) shares are down a considerable 28% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 40% share price drop.

Although its price has dipped substantially, there still wouldn't be many who think Urovo Technology's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 27.4x is worth a mention when the median P/E in China is similar at about 29x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Urovo Technology over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing earnings performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Urovo Technology's Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the market for P/E ratios like Urovo Technology's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 28% decrease to the company's bottom line. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 36% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.

With this information, we find it interesting that Urovo Technology is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

The Final Word

With its share price falling into a hole, the P/E for Urovo Technology looks quite average now. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of Urovo Technology revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
