Shareholders in Wanda Film Holding (SZSE:002739) Are in the Red If They Invested Five Years Ago

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 8 21:34

While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the Wanda Film Holding Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002739) share price has gained 19% in the last three months. But if you look at the last five years the returns have not been good. You would have done a lot better buying an index fund, since the stock has dropped 33% in that half decade.

Since shareholders are down over the longer term, lets look at the underlying fundamentals over the that time and see if they've been consistent with returns.

Because Wanda Film Holding made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last five years Wanda Film Holding saw its revenue shrink by 8.0% per year. While far from catastrophic that is not good. The share price decline at a rate of 6% per year is disappointing. But it doesn't surprise given the falling revenue. It might be worth watching for signs of a turnaround - buyers are probably expecting one.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Wanda Film Holding shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 6.9% over the last year. That certainly beats the loss of about 6% per year over the last half decade. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes.
