Insiders were net sellers of Vector Group Ltd.'s (NYSE:VGR ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders sold more stock than they bought.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Vector Group

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Independent Chairman of the Board, Bennett LeBow, sold US$2.1m worth of shares at a price of US$12.93 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$10.34). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Bennett LeBow.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$206k for 20.00k shares. But insiders sold 331.05k shares worth US$4.1m. Bennett LeBow ditched 331.05k shares over the year. The average price per share was US$12.24. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Vector Group insiders own about US$234m worth of shares (which is 14% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Do The Vector Group Insider Transactions Indicate?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Vector Group shares in the last quarter.
