Dentsu Group ·  Apr 3 11:00

- Some internal awareness raising measures have been disclosed to contribute to promoting understanding of minority representation in society as a whole -

The Dentsu Group (brand: “dentsu,” headquarters: Dentsu Group Inc., base: Minato-ku, Tokyo; representative: Hiroshi Igarashi, President and Global CEO) is implementing a number of unique internal awareness measures utilizing Dentsu's creativity with the aim of realizing “representation” (a state where minority groups are treated fairly with proper representation) of all 71,000 global employees. This time, in order to further spread understanding about the importance of “representation” in society as a whole, we will disclose some of the awareness raising measures that have been implemented so far.

Furthermore, in order to raise global awareness about “representation,” which is an important concept in the diversity equity inclusion (DEI) area, each Dentsu region has set individual issues and is developing and implementing optimal unique measures.

Initiatives in each region aimed at raising awareness about “representation”

■ Japan (Japan)

“LGBTQ+” explains in an easy-to-understand manner why companies need to work on LGBTQ+ based on episodes that Dentsu Japan employees actually experienced.
Also, in “Disability Edition,” there is a “social model” for disabilities※1“Rational consideration” that can be done on an individual level while exchanging the opinions of the parties involved under the theme※2It explains how to do it.

■ Americas (North America, South America)

“Gender Equality” takes up the fact that gender disparities in the workplace are caused by various factors in a multifaceted manner. Also, in the “LGBTQ+ Community Edition,” the purpose is to introduce the real voices of Dentsu employees involved in LGBTQ+ parties, and to have viewers “imagine” what kind of world they live in.

Since the Dentsu Group believes in the limitless possibilities created by connecting people, we are implementing various measures to deeply root DEI ideas into the organization in order to provide opportunities for diverse human resources to play an active role and foster a fair corporate culture. Going forward, various advanced initiatives related to DEI will continue※5As a B2B2S (Business to Business to Society) company that creates both economic value and social value through, and through other measures, we will work to realize a vibrant society full of joy in which people live by solving social issues together through collaboration with client companies.

*1 The “social model” for disability is a way of thinking that people's disabilities are not an individual problem, but rather a problem for society as a whole that has created those barriers, and that barriers should be removed as a responsibility on the social side. In response to this, an approach that captures disability as an individual's mental and physical function problem is called a “medical model of disability.” Dentsu Japan takes disability as a “social model,” believes that the cause lies in social systems and structures created on the premise of people without disabilities, and is working to resolve it. Currently, even in Japan, companies are required to provide “reasonable accommodations” based on the “social model.”

*2 “Rational consideration” (based on social models) means preparing an environment for people with disabilities so that they can participate in social life in the same way as people without disabilities.

*3 “Microaggression” is translated as “minor aggression,” and it means a statement or action that causes harm to the other party as a result in casual everyday conversation even though there is no intention to discriminate against or hurt the other person. This is caused by unconscious prejudice, lack of understanding, and preconceptions about people who are different from oneself.

*4 Alliances are when people who are not part of a minority group understand and support people in a minority group. Ally in minority alliance means ally (ally, alliance, support) in English.
