Possible Bearish Signals With Dycom Industries Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 22 08:14

Many Dycom Industries, Inc. (NYSE:DY) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Dycom Industries

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Principal Accounting Officer, H. DeFerrari, for US$968k worth of shares, at about US$94.11 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$142. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was just 7.5% of H. DeFerrari's stake.

Insider Ownership Of Dycom Industries

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Dycom Industries insiders own 3.2% of the company, currently worth about US$130m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
