CACI International Inc's (NYSE:CACI) Stock Is Going Strong: Is the Market Following Fundamentals?

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 13 11:11

Most readers would already be aware that CACI International's (NYSE:CACI) stock increased significantly by 14% over the past three months. Since the market usually pay for a company's long-term fundamentals, we decided to study the company's key performance indicators to see if they could be influencing the market. Specifically, we decided to study CACI International's ROE in this article.

ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. Simply put, it is used to assess the profitability of a company in relation to its equity capital.

How Is ROE Calculated?

Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for CACI International is:

12% = US$378m ÷ US$3.2b (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).

The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. That means that for every $1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated $0.12 in profit.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company's earnings growth potential. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

CACI International's Earnings Growth And 12% ROE

To start with, CACI International's ROE looks acceptable. Further, the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 12%. This certainly adds some context to CACI International's moderate 8.1% net income growth seen over the past five years.

Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that CACI International's reported growth was lower than the industry growth of 11% over the last few years, which is not something we like to see.
