Possible Bearish Signals With Iridium Communications Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 9 09:06

In the last year, many Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:IRDM) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Iridium Communications

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Bryan Hartin, for US$1.1m worth of shares, at about US$64.80 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$28.49. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Iridium Communications insiders own about US$49m worth of shares. That equates to 1.4% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
