Further Upside For AdaptHealth Corp. (NASDAQ:AHCO) Shares Could Introduce Price Risks After 57% Bounce

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 8 07:12

AdaptHealth Corp. (NASDAQ:AHCO) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 57% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 21% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, AdaptHealth's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Healthcare industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1x and even P/S above 3x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does AdaptHealth's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

AdaptHealth could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

AdaptHealth's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 7.7% gain to the company's revenues. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 199% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 6.0% per annum as estimated by the ten analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 7.7% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that AdaptHealth's P/S is lagging behind its industry peers. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Bottom Line On AdaptHealth's P/S

Despite AdaptHealth's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of AdaptHealth's revealed that its P/S remains low despite analyst forecasts of revenue growth matching the wider industry. Despite average revenue growth estimates, there could be some unobserved threats keeping the P/S low. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.
