Tatwah Smartech Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:002512) Surges 36% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 6 17:32

Those holding Tatwah Smartech Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:002512) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 36% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 5.9% isn't as impressive.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Tatwah SmartechLtd may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.5x, considering almost half of all companies in the Electronic industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 3.7x and even P/S higher than 7x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Tatwah SmartechLtd Has Been Performing

Recent times have been quite advantageous for Tatwah SmartechLtd as its revenue has been rising very briskly. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dwindle, which has kept the P/S suppressed. Those who are bullish on Tatwah SmartechLtd will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

How Is Tatwah SmartechLtd's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Tatwah SmartechLtd would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 35%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 22% drop in revenue in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 25% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

With this in mind, we understand why Tatwah SmartechLtd's P/S is lower than most of its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What We Can Learn From Tatwah SmartechLtd's P/S?

Despite Tatwah SmartechLtd's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

It's no surprise that Tatwah SmartechLtd maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
