It's Down 25% But SharpLink Gaming, Inc. (NASDAQ:SBET) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 22 06:37

SharpLink Gaming, Inc. (NASDAQ:SBET) shares have had a horrible month, losing 25% after a relatively good period beforehand. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 70% loss during that time.

After such a large drop in price, given about half the companies operating in the United States' Hospitality industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.3x, you may consider SharpLink Gaming as an attractive investment with its 0.3x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How SharpLink Gaming Has Been Performing

With revenue growth that's exceedingly strong of late, SharpLink Gaming has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for SharpLink Gaming, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as SharpLink Gaming's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 105% gain to the company's top line. The latest three year period has also seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, aided by its incredible short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a tremendous job of growing revenue over that time.

Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 15% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

With this in mind, we find it intriguing that SharpLink Gaming's P/S isn't as high compared to that of its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What Does SharpLink Gaming's P/S Mean For Investors?

The southerly movements of SharpLink Gaming's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We're very surprised to see SharpLink Gaming currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. Potential investors that are sceptical over continued revenue performance may be preventing the P/S ratio from matching previous strong performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
