More Unpleasant Surprises Could Be In Store For GoPro, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:GPRO) Shares After Tumbling 28%

GoPro, Inc. (NASDAQ:GPRO) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 28% share price drop in the last month. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 60% share price decline.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, it's still not a stretch to say that GoPro's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Consumer Durables industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.8x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has GoPro Performed Recently?

With revenue that's retreating more than the industry's average of late, GoPro has been very sluggish. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to begin matching the rest of the industry, which has kept the P/S from declining. If you still like the company, you'd want its revenue trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like GoPro's to be considered reasonable.

There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the negative growth outlook.
