Little Excitement Around CareDx, Inc's (NASDAQ:CDNA) Revenues As Shares Take 28% Pounding

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 14 05:18

CareDx, Inc (NASDAQ:CDNA) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 28% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 49% share price drop.

Since its price has dipped substantially, CareDx may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.4x, since almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 14.1x and even P/S higher than 59x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How CareDx Has Been Performing

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, CareDx's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think CareDx's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is CareDx's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, CareDx would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 6.7% decrease to the company's top line. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 75% in total over the last three years. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 11% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 832% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.

In light of this, it's understandable that CareDx's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What We Can Learn From CareDx's P/S?

CareDx's P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

It's clear to see that CareDx maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
