Simply Wall St ·  Feb 9 07:47

Last week, FREYR Battery, Inc. (NYSE:FREY) insiders, who had purchased shares in the previous 12 months were rewarded handsomely. The shares increased by 30% last week, resulting in a US$57m increase in the company's market worth, implying a 19% gain on their initial purchase. In other words, the original US$894.0k purchase is now worth US$1.07m.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

FREYR Battery Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by insider Tore Slettemoen for US$894k worth of shares, at about US$1.49 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$1.78), we still think insider buying is a positive. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Does FREYR Battery Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. FREYR Battery insiders own about US$17m worth of shares. That equates to 8.0% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Does This Data Suggest About FREYR Battery Insiders?

It is good to see the recent insider purchase. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But on the other hand, the company made a loss during the last year, which makes us a little cautious. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of FREYR Battery we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future.
