Kosmos Energy Insiders Sold US$12m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 8 05:45

The fact that multiple Kosmos Energy Ltd. (NYSE:KOS) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Kosmos Energy Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In fact, the recent sale by Andrew Inglis was the biggest sale of Kosmos Energy shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$5.67. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

In the last year Kosmos Energy insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!

Kosmos Energy Insiders Are Selling The Stock

Does Kosmos Energy Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Kosmos Energy insiders own about US$55m worth of shares. That equates to 2.1% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Kosmos Energy Tell Us?

Insiders haven't bought Kosmos Energy stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases.
