Investors Give Shenma Industry Co.Ltd (SHSE:600810) Shares A 30% Hiding

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 5 18:14

The Shenma Industry Co.Ltd (SHSE:600810) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 30%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 34% share price drop.

Even after such a large drop in price, Shenma IndustryLtd may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, considering almost half of all companies in the Chemicals industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 1.8x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Shenma IndustryLtd Performed Recently?

Shenma IndustryLtd hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Shenma IndustryLtd's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 24%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 40% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 25% during the coming year according to the two analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 26% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Shenma IndustryLtd's P/S is lagging behind its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Final Word

The southerly movements of Shenma IndustryLtd's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

It looks to us like the P/S figures for Shenma IndustryLtd remain low despite growth that is expected to be in line with other companies in the industry. The low P/S could be an indication that the revenue growth estimates are being questioned by the market. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
