Zhejiang Lante Optics Co., Ltd.'s (SHSE:688127) 26% Cheaper Price Remains In Tune With Earnings

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 5 17:27

The Zhejiang Lante Optics Co., Ltd. (SHSE:688127) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 26%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 19% in that time.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, Zhejiang Lante Optics' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 52.9x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 26x and even P/E's below 16x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.

Zhejiang Lante Optics certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. The P/E is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader market headwinds better than most. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Keen to find out how analysts think Zhejiang Lante Optics' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Zhejiang Lante Optics' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 30% last year. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 32% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 106% as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 41%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why Zhejiang Lante Optics is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Zhejiang Lante Optics' P/E?

Even after such a strong price drop, Zhejiang Lante Optics' P/E still exceeds the rest of the market significantly. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that Zhejiang Lante Optics maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Zhejiang Lante Optics (of which 1 is a bit unpleasant!) you should know about.
