VSE Corporation's (NASDAQ:VSEC) Earnings Haven't Escaped The Attention Of Investors

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 30 06:08

When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 17x, you may consider VSE Corporation (NASDAQ:VSEC) as a stock to potentially avoid with its 25x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, VSE has been doing quite well of late. The P/E is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader market headwinds better than most. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is VSE's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, VSE would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 51% gain to the company's bottom line. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 13% as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 10%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

With this information, we can see why VSE is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Final Word

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of VSE's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

Before you settle on your opinion, we've discovered 2 warning signs for VSE (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) that you should be aware of.
