IoTエッジデバイスやゲートウェイ機器に向けて機能強化した64ビットMPU「RZ/G3S」を発売

Launch of the 64-bit MPU “RZ/G3S” with enhanced functionality for IoT edge devices and gateway devices

Renesas Electronics ·  Jan 15 10:00

Renesas Electronics Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Hidetoshi Shibata, hereafter Renesas) has recently expanded the RZ/G series of 64-bit general-purpose MPUs (microprocessor units), launched the “RZ/G3S” for IoT edge devices and gateway devices, and began mass production. IoT edge devices are required to reduce power consumption, support for high-speed communication, and enhance security, etc., and new products have enhanced performance and functionality to meet these needs. In response to lower power consumption, we achieved both an extremely low standby power of 10 μW and high-speed Linux startup. Also, since it is equipped with PCI Express, it is possible to connect to a 5G communication module at a high speed. Furthermore, data can be kept safe by enhancing security functions such as tamper detection. These make it ideal for IoT edge devices and gateway devices such as home gateways, smart meters, and various trackers (tracking devices).

Daryl Khoo, business manager of Renesas' Embedded Processing Division 1, said: “Renesas' RZ/G is steadily being adopted in the global industrial HMI market. The RZ/G3S is a next-generation product for the rapidly growing 5G IoT and Gigabit Wi-Fi 7 gateway markets. Renesas is actively expanding its connectivity portfolio through strategic acquisitions, and will continue to provide advanced connectivity solutions that are energy efficient at the system level and promote data usage.”

The RZ/G3S is equipped with an ARM Cortex-?$#@$ core with a maximum operating frequency of 1.1 GHz as the main CPU, and is equipped with 2 Cortex-M33 cores operating at 250 MHz as sub-CPUs. Since loads such as data acquisition from sensors, system control, and power supply control can be distributed to the sub-CPU, the load on the main CPU is reduced, the number of parts and costs of the entire system is reduced, and equipment miniaturization is realized.

Low-power standby mode for fast Linux startup

We have newly developed a power supply control system that can reduce power consumption to 10 μW or less. It supports a DDR self-refresh function to hold DRAM data, and is compatible with Linux's high-speed startup. This makes it possible to reduce the power consumption of IoT devices with frequent intermittent operation, and battery-powered devices can run for a long time. Furthermore, since a standby mode that can maintain sub-CPU operation with 40mW class power is also provided, it is possible to design optimized power consumption according to application operation specifications.

Equipped with PCI Express to support 5G connections

The RZ/G3S is equipped with a PCI Express interface in addition to Gigabit Ethernet, CAN, USB, etc. in order to enhance functions for IoT gateway devices. Thus, gigahertz class high-speed communication is possible by connecting a 5G communication module, etc.

High reliability and strong security features

Inheriting the concept of the RZ/G series, the internal memory and external DDR interface are equipped with ECC (error detection/correction) functions. Also, operation has been verified based on the highly reliable Civil Infrastructure Platform Linux for the industrial fieldVerified Linux package(VLP) is provided. Protect your system from security threats with over 10 years of long-term maintenance support. Furthermore, in addition to secure boot, secure debugging, etc., it also provides a tamper detection function. RZ/G series products have already obtained PSA Certified level 2 of the certification system provided by ARM, and the RZ/G3S is also scheduled to obtain it.

Anders Holmberg, CTO of IAR, stated the following. “Our IAR Embedded Workbench for Arm supports both MCU and MPU. By combining Renesas' RZ/G3s MPU, which provides a strong root of trust, with IAR's extensive security solutions, customers can quickly develop high-performance and secure IoT devices and bring products to market.”

WINNING COMBINATIONS

Renesas combines power management ICs and clock products optimized for RZ/G3S,”single board computer gateway” We have developed a solution. Various sensors can be connected via USB, CAN, RS485, UART, and I2C due to the extensive RZ/G3S interfaces. Furthermore, by connecting high-performance radio modules, it is also possible to build a robust network for home automation and IoT applications. Furthermore, the advanced sleep mode function utilizing multiple cores enables real-time data processing with low power consumption. Renesas' winning combination optimally combines Renesas products and performs design verification by engineers, thereby reducing user design risk and shortening time until market launch. Renesas offers over 400 winning combinations for various applications. Please see here for details.renesas.com/ win
