DouYu International Holdings Limited (NASDAQ:DOYU) Surges 27% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 6 08:21

DouYu International Holdings Limited (NASDAQ:DOYU) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 27% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 43% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, DouYu International Holdings may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, since almost half of all companies in the Entertainment industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.2x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How DouYu International Holdings Has Been Performing

DouYu International Holdings could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think DouYu International Holdings' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is DouYu International Holdings' Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, DouYu International Holdings would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 24% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 37% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 11% during the coming year according to the seven analysts following the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 13%.

In light of this, it's understandable that DouYu International Holdings' P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What We Can Learn From DouYu International Holdings' P/S?

DouYu International Holdings' stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that DouYu International Holdings' P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, DouYu International Holdings' poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
