An Unusual Tax Situation

We can see that Pioneer Global Group received a tax benefit of HK$14m. It's always a bit noteworthy when a company is paid by the tax man, rather than paying the tax man. We're sure the company was pleased with its tax benefit. However, our data indicates that tax benefits can temporarily boost statutory profit in the year it is booked, but subsequently profit may fall back. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal.

Our Take On Pioneer Global Group's Profit Performance

As we have already discussed Pioneer Global Group reported that it received a tax benefit, rather than paying tax, in the last year. Given that sort of benefit is not recurring, a focus on the statutory profit might make the company seem better than it really is. Because of this, we think that it may be that Pioneer Global Group's statutory profits are better than its underlying earnings power. But at least holders can take some solace from the 11% EPS growth in the last year. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider. In light of this, if you'd like to do more analysis on the company, it's vital to be informed of the risks involved. When we did our research, we found 2 warning signs for Pioneer Global Group (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that we believe deserve your full attention.

This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of Pioneer Global Group's profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying.
