GeneDx Holdings Corp.'s (NASDAQ:WGS) Shares Bounce 56% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 20, 2023 06:48

Those holding GeneDx Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ:WGS) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 56% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 75% share price drop in the last twelve months.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, when close to half the companies operating in the United States' Healthcare industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.1x, you may still consider GeneDx Holdings as an enticing stock to check out with its 0.3x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has GeneDx Holdings Performed Recently?

GeneDx Holdings could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is GeneDx Holdings' Revenue Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like GeneDx Holdings' to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 11%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 15% in total. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 3.5% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 7.6% growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's understandable that GeneDx Holdings' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What Does GeneDx Holdings' P/S Mean For Investors?

Despite GeneDx Holdings' share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of GeneDx Holdings' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
