Lacklustre Performance Is Driving Gemdale Corporation's (SHSE:600383) Low P/S

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 17, 2023 22:40

Gemdale Corporation's (SHSE:600383) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Real Estate industry in China, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.6x and even P/S above 5x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Gemdale's Recent Performance Look Like?

Gemdale certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the share price, and thus the P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Gemdale's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is Gemdale's Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Gemdale's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 21% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 96% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 10.0% as estimated by the eleven analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 11%.

In light of this, it's understandable that Gemdale's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

What Does Gemdale's P/S Mean For Investors?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Gemdale's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Gemdale's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
