Jiangsu Yunyi ElectricLtd (SZSE:300304) Sheds 7.5% This Week, as Yearly Returns Fall More in Line With Earnings Growth

When we invest, we're generally looking for stocks that outperform the market average. And while active stock picking involves risks (and requires diversification) it can also provide excess returns. For example, the Jiangsu Yunyi Electric Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:300304) share price is up 73% in the last 5 years, clearly besting the market return of around 31% (ignoring dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 44% in the last year , including dividends .

While the stock has fallen 7.5% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over half a decade, Jiangsu Yunyi ElectricLtd managed to grow its earnings per share at 14% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 12% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Jiangsu Yunyi ElectricLtd, it has a TSR of 80% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Jiangsu Yunyi ElectricLtd shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 44% over the last year. That's including the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 12% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Jiangsu Yunyi ElectricLtd better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that Jiangsu Yunyi ElectricLtd is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those makes us a bit uncomfortable...
