If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But you can do a lot better than that by buying good quality businesses for attractive prices. For example, the Shanghai Wondertek Software Co., Ltd (SHSE:603189) share price is 33% higher than it was five years ago, which is more than the market average. Zooming in, the stock is actually down 1.5% in the last year.

The past week has proven to be lucrative for Shanghai Wondertek Software investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's five-year performance.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Shanghai Wondertek Software's earnings per share are down 12% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.

We doubt the modest 0.6% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. In contrast revenue growth of 6.3% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Shanghai Wondertek Software is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Shanghai Wondertek Software's TSR for the last 5 years was 35%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

While it's certainly disappointing to see that Shanghai Wondertek Software shares lost 0.9% throughout the year, that wasn't as bad as the market loss of 6.7%. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 6%, each year, over five years. It could be that the business is just facing some short term problems, but shareholders should keep a close eye on the fundamentals. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Shanghai Wondertek Software better, we need to consider many other factors.
