Shockwave Medical Insiders Sell US$966k Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 30, 2023 10:03

In the last year, many Shockwave Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ:SWAV) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Shockwave Medical

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the CFO, Principal Financial Officer & Secretary, Daniel Puckett, sold US$598k worth of shares at a price of US$292 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$170. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 1.0% of Shockwave Medical shares, worth about US$63m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
