Kyndryl Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:KD) Stock Catapults 29% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Industry

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 28, 2023 09:13

Kyndryl Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:KD) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 29% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 68% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, Kyndryl Holdings' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the IT industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.8x and even P/S above 5x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Kyndryl Holdings' P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Kyndryl Holdings could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Kyndryl Holdings?

Kyndryl Holdings' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 3.6%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 13% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 7.6% during the coming year according to the four analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 9.7% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.

In light of this, it's understandable that Kyndryl Holdings' P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What Does Kyndryl Holdings' P/S Mean For Investors?

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Kyndryl Holdings' P/S close to the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of Kyndryl Holdings' analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Kyndryl Holdings' poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
