12% Of This Webster Financial Insider's Holdings Were Sold

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 23, 2023 13:34

Looking at Webster Financial Corporation's (NYSE:WBS ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net sellers. That is, there were more number of shares sold by insiders than there were purchased.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Webster Financial Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The COO & Senior Executive VP, Luis Massiani, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$596k worth of shares at a price of US$37.27 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$43.11). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 12% of Luis Massiani's holding. Luis Massiani was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Does Webster Financial Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Webster Financial insiders own 1.0% of the company, worth about US$75m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
